Bob's 1st Elk
My wife, Debbie, has been after me for years to
get a nice Elk for the wall. This year, while in Reno, at the SCI
National Convention, we were on the lookout for a guided Trophy Elk
hunt. We found one with Broadmouth Canyon Ranch, in Utah. Owned by
Rulond Jones, retired Denver Bronco football player.
I booked
the hunt for the 1st week of October, this year.
When I arrived
it was 89 degrees. The next morning, the first day of my hunt, it had
snowed that night and the temp had dropped to 34 degrees. That was a
good thing for any hunter.
I was scheduled for a knee replacement
the following week when I returned home. So I made the decision to hike,
in the snow, to an elevation of 9,000ft. took 2 hrs to get up the mtn.
and a bit more to get down as I had slipped in the snow, on the hill and
decided best to get down on some flatter land to the ATV. It was a good
decision as an hour later we found a bunch of cows with a huge herd
bull. The bull I harvested was not the heard bull. About 500 yards, just
to the right of the heard, my guide Dalton Jones, Rulonds son, had
spotted the bull for me. We made a stock, he never was us coming. Got to
140 yards and made a good 1 shot quartering away. We were all excited
and Debbie will now have her Elk on the wall.
I made new
friends, like we all do in the hunting camps we go to. One new friend
from Illinois harvested a none Trophy 5 by 5 with a pistol. He then
asked me if I wanted the meat from his Elk, as I had driven my truck and
had no problem taking it home. It was a yes from me and it has been fun
sharing all the Elk meat with our friends. Drove 14 hrs straight thru on
I-84 a few days later.
The following week I had the knee
replaced and am doing well. Will be ready to start hunting in 2010. My
wife and I already have a Mule Deer, a Moose hunt and a Whitetail hunt
scheduled for 2010. Will be going to the Convention in Reno again in Feb
and who knows what hunts we may come away with.
